Casa Botín is the oldest restaurant in the world and it’s located in Madrid.

Located in the extreme reaches of southwestern Europe, Spain is well known for its geographic and cultural legacy. The country occupies roughly 85 percent of the Iberian Peninsula, which it shares with its neighbor Portugal.

A storied country complete with historic architecture, vibrant festivals, and sophisticated cities, Spain is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. The heartland of Spain resides in the Meseta, a broad central plateau that lies half a mile above sea level. Other regions of Spain include mountainous Catalonia and coastal Valencia in the north and the valley of the Guadalquivir River in the south.

Spain’s countryside is dotted with ancient castles, aqueducts, and ruins. However, its leading cities are modern centers known for art, music, and progress. The top five most visited cities in Spain are Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Valencia, and Seville. Tour any of these unique cities, and you’ll find an abundance of cultural landmarks, first-class bars and restaurants, and an assortment of delicious culinary treats.

Let's get cooking!

Explore the sweet taste of Spanish cuisine as you dine on this divine churro recipe!

Churros with Chocolate Sauce

While the origin of the churro is still a mystery, a good portion of culinary historians believe Spanish shepherds created the churro while looking for a substitute for fresh goods. Others believe the churro was brought to Europe by Portuguese explorers after an expedition to China. No matter their origin, the churro has been a staple of Spanish cuisine for hundreds of years. Throughout Spain, churros exist in two distinct shapes: thin (sometimes also knotted) or long and thick. The second type of churro is sometimes called a porra (or jeringo in some regions). Usually eaten for breakfast, churros are dipped in champurrado, hot chocolate, dulce de leche, or cafe con leche. Churros are also usually topped with cinnamon sugar.
